I Fell in Love With Hope by Lancali: A Review

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you guys had a wonderful holiday! I'm jumping straight back into it with a highly anticipated read of mine, ‘I Fell in Love With Hope’. This book has been on my to-be-read for a while and, I recently got gifted it for Christmas, which made it top of my list for the rest of my Christmas/New Year break.

‘I fell in love with Hope’ is a book written in a beautiful, poetic style of prose that tells the story of a group of terminally ill patients. I should start this review by stating that this book does contain heavy topics including, death, domestic abuse, suicide, self-harm, eating disorders and gory depictions of disease. Take care of yourselves first and don’t read his book if you aren’t prepared for on-page discussion of these topics.

I went into this book knowing that there was a possibility I was going to cry… but I really didn't understand the depth of the topics discussed in this book. I haven't cried that hard in a long while and I think the book is drop-dead gorgeous in every sense. Sony, Hikari, Neo, Ceour and Sam really have stolen a piece of my soul and to be honest I'm not mad about it at all. I think the whole book feels so tangible; love, hope, death, and grief are shaken into the words on every page in an enchanting mixture.

While I’ve seen some people say that they think that the plot is flat or hard to read, I don't think that's the case at all. While the writing is wordy and, at times overly poetic, I do think it puts into perspective the struggles of all of the characters and their battles not only with others but also with themselves.

I think this book is one that I will carry a piece of with me wherever I go. For me, this was a well-needed reminder that hope is always there, whether it's tangible or not.

Happy Reading,

Mei xxx
