a song of salvation by Alechia Dow: a review
This book was very kindly gifted to me by Harper ya360 and I'm very happy to be reviewing it this week!
A Song of Salvation is a brilliant sci-fi novel and I really think that Alechia Dow's approach to the entire concept is just so good. I don't normally read sci-fi but this was definitely the exception I really enjoyed this and it made a very good change of pace for me.
The Song of Salvation can be read as a stand alone but I've also heard that it is better read when you read her previous two books. For me personally I haven't read her previous two books but I think that it works perfectly fine as a standalone too.
The story is told from multiple perspectives namely the three main protagonists of the story, Wesley, Rubin and Zaira. I think that the multiple perspectives storytelling was done really well in this book and it didn't confuse me as much as it can in other books which was a brilliant win in my eyes. I loved all the characters because they're all very well developed and their dynamic together as a group demonstrated strengths and weaknesses. It felt realistic and tangible rather than far-fetched perfection.
One thing that I also really love about this book is the amount of diverse representation. There's a lot of black and queer representation that I think is done very, very well and they also really appreciate that it's not the sole focus of the book. I feel like the plot could have been a bit more intense because although the characters were in danger I didn't feel like it was absolute crisis or anything, but it didn't take away from the plot at all.
I think that I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an LGBTQ read or a modern sic-fi read. Overall I would give it 3.5 stars: not my usual speed but a book certainly worth reading!
Happy reading,
Mei x
