Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen: A Review

Hi guys! Guess what… I forgot that I was supposed to be posting today! Luckily for me, by the time the reminder popped up on my phone - I had just finished reading this wonderful book in one sitting. I read this book in about 4 hours with breaks, of course, for schoolwork and I just could not put it down!

Violet Made of Thorns is the perfect mix of fantasy, romance, enemies to lovers, morally grey witches and age-old curses.

Violet Made of Thorns was one of the books that I bought earlier this year as a hardback book, but I have this thing where I find it harder to read hardbacks - they're just annoying to carry around with as they can be quite bulky. So I dedicated all of my hardbacks to times when I can just read at home, and thankfully for me - today was one of them.

When I picked this book up this morning I had absolutely no issues getting right into the storyline, as it's so well written and it just completely entranced me from the start. I found that I really enjoyed Chen's writing style, and finishing the book came quite easily. It would absolutely be a relatively easy read for anybody looking for a less serious, light-hearted tale.

One of the things I loved most about this book is that there was no point where I felt things were moving too slowly. The plot was paced incredibly well and it kept me caught in a trance the entire time I was reading. Every last chapter of this book is littered with details that I absolutely adored picking out. There were nods to many well-known fairy tales throughout the book that I really appreciated as a child who always adored those far-fetched fantasies.

Violet and Cyrus also have such a crazy dynamic that I loved watching play out on the pages. The idea of having a morally grey witch and a cursed Prince interact is already enough to get me going, and the fact that this was twisted with forbidden love made it even better. Also, I adored Camille as a character and I just loved seeing her on the page, interacting with other characters.

I really did enjoy this book and I absolutely cannot wait to see what Chen does next with this wonderful story! I would highly recommend it to anybody who enjoyed The Cruel Prince and Red Queen.

Happy reading,

Mei xxx
