House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Mass: A Review
Ahhhh! Happy one-year to this beautiful blog page and happy pride! To this year and hopefully many more!
This week I've decided to write about one of my more recent reads. This book has been sitting on my TBR for a while since I finished 'House of Earth and Blood' because I needed a break from all of my fantasy reading... but I kept getting distracted and never really got around to it until very recently. And boy did I forget what SJM books are like, because this was one hell of a rollercoaster (and I'm not mad about it).
'House of Sky and Breath' is the second in a series of novels by Sarah J. Mass. These novels are adult fiction novels for mature readers and are not suitable for young audiences.
PLEASE READ 'House of Earth and Blood' BEFORE READING THIS REVIEW.
One of my favourite things about the way SJM writes is how long her books are. They are long novels without being boring or slow, but sometimes there are chaotic sections where everything seems to happen all at once and it can be confusing, but honestly, I don't mind it. It's more of a personal preference thing. It also leads straight on from the events of book one and I really like that there isn't much of a time gap.
I will admit that the prologue of this book was pretty boring for me, and it really made it a struggle to get fully into this one, but we got there in the end and I have to say that this book is so worth reading. Its structure is similar to that of 'House of Earth and Blood' which gives it a nice consistency as the second of this series.
The character development for all of the characters throughout this book is so well written and all of the characters are relatively well rounded and have depth to them. The book held a good pace throughout and as much as I loved seeing Bryce and Hunt interact, I also adored seeing Day and Night waltzing around each other through the book.
I cannot describe how much the last few chapters wrecked me (in the best way possible). Like many of her novels, SJM seems to like throwing every last piece of her readers' sanity out the window in the last couple of chapters, which holds VERY true for this book. I was a mess... But I can't say that I'm upset about it because it was sooooo well written and genuinely shocked me to my core.
This is a series that I will be recommending for a long time. I genuinely adore these books so much and am waiting in heavy anticipation for 'House of Flame and Shadow'. I could not ask you to read this book more.
Happy Reading,
- Mei x
