The Girls I've Been by Tess Sharpe: A Review
This week's book is 'The Girls I've Been' by Tessa Sharpe. I have fallen into an annoyingly bad reading slump recently, but this is a book that helped get me back on track for the coming weeks. It's a lovely contemporary, mystery, and thriller that just kept giving; when I found out that the Netflix adaptation stars Millie Bobby Brown I had to keep myself from squealing! I am so excited about this adaptation and really hope it lives up to the book.
Anyways...
The story follows Nora, the daughter of a con artist, who gets caught up in a bank heist with both her girlfriend and ex-boyfriend, yet still friend, Wess.
This is probably the only time you will see me say that the duel timelines in this book are done so well, I love it. Typically I find that when they are used in suspense novels, they can become sloppy and skimmed over too fast but Tess ensures that the pace we receive information is perfect for keeping us reading well over what we planned. Each section gives us more insight and background that hooks you like a fish and drives you to keep reading.
I found that once I had started, I couldn't put the book down at all and was more invested than I had ever anticipated. By the end of the book, it had messed with my head in the best way possible and I was in love with the end of the book.
Tess has such a captivating way of writing that I hope many other people will come to love her as much as I do. I would rate this book a solid 4 stars and recommend it to anyone over 13. There is some content such as sexual abuse (not explicit) and graphic imagery of blood that may be unsuitable to younger readers but it is the perfect teen novel for any young reader.
Happy Reading,
