Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi: A Review

This week I have chosen the book 'Shatter Me' by Tahereh Mafi. I had been told many things about this series ranging from 'must-read' to 'train wreck', so I wasn't sure what I should be expecting from this book. I was hoping that this book would be one that I could read easily during the morning before I left the house and it held to my standards of a relaxed read.

Shatter Me follows the story of a girl called Juliette and her Journey of self-discovery. Juliette was locked in an asylum for months once she discovers she has a strange ability. Her touch is lethal... She was imprisoned for murder by the reestablishment and has been placed in solitary confinement due to her special circumstances.

She is there on the basis that if she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one cares about a 17-year-old in a cell.

If I'm being completely honest, it is a trust-the-process book until you get to the second book. I was looking forward to reading this but the writing is very metaphoric and simile heavy which can lead to getting bored. I had a hard time getting into this book, but the writing was comprehensible enough for me to finish the book and consider investing in the rest of the series.

I know that many people have pointed out that this is a romance-centred novel and not a dystopian novel, and I'd have to agree, but I do appreciate the way the dystopian aspects of the plot are presented. Some other dystopian novels I've read struggle with the idea of world-building but in this book, I found that I understood the world Mafi had created very quickly, which helped keep me reading.

Overall I would give this book a solid 4 stars.

Happy reading,
