The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner: A Review
If you're looking for a captivating and suspenseful read, look no further than The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. This novel takes place across two time periods - present-day and 18th-century London. The story follows two women as they embark on a quest to find their own paths in life.
The narrative is filled with tension and intrigue, making it an absolute page-turner. However, if you struggle to follow small details in books, this may be a bit of a longer read for you. I would recommend that you take your time while reading this one in order to appreciate the complexity of the plot fully. After reading it twice I realized it is packed with gorgeous details that I missed the first time I read the book.
I absolutely adored this book through and through, mainly because of the plot but also because it crosses paths with the topics of abortion and menstruation, both of which I think should be discussed more openly in society.
here is my version of the plot summary:
Deep in the dark and chilly February night, in an out-of-the-way apothecary, Nella greets her newest customer. Once, Nella was well-respected as a healer but she has found a new purpose for her talents in using what she knows for other purposes - she sells concealed poisons to ladies in search of being free from their troublesome men. Nonetheless, when her new patron turns out to be a precocious twelve-year-old named Eliza Fanning, their unexpected friendship triggers a series of unfortunate events that threaten Nella's privacy, as well as her clients' anonymity.
During the present day, it is London's celebration of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee, and aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell had every reason to feel proud, happy, and above all, ready for a special time alone with her husband after ten years of marriage. Unfortunately, he's been engaged in an affair, a betrayal Caroline came across by chance, just outside an anniversary garden party at the lush Westminster Palace.
Soon, Caroline’s life collides with Nella’s and Eliza’s in a twist of fate - and not everyone will survive.
Published in March last year, The Lost Apothecary is perfect for readers who enjoy mystery and historical literature. Its intricate storyline and well-developed characters will leave you enthralled until the very end. So if you're searching for an engaging read, this is definitely the book for you.
Happy reading,
-Mei
