Winterkill by Kate A. Boorman: A Review
After a very mild autumn, I finally feel like winter is setting in here in England and I've spent lots of time on the sofa with a hot drink, and reading under a blanket. This book was one I chose for its cover (which is bad I know) but it lived up to my expectations.
Winterkill by Kate A. Boorman was published in 2014, so it’s not a new book but that doesn’t matter that much. I like this book because it has a very cosy, campfire feel to it; It feels like it was written in the 17th century and I like that about it.
Plot summary:
The story is about Emmeline (Em for short), who grew up in a settlement. It's the only thing she and the people living there know. The woods around them are scary and full of ‘malmaci’ who are the monsters of their nightmares. But Em is a very curious young girl and she often spends time wandering through the woods. But, it's what she discovers there, will change everything.
The story is set somewhere in Canada where the French and colonizers inhabit side by side. I love the snowy settlement setting and the description of the people there. Besides the setting, I like Em’s character too! She is the perfect blend of ordinary and bold and I feel like she would be an easy person to talk to. There is also our love interest, Kane, and their interactions just melted me. It was a very small sub-plot but the detail was appreciated.
The last thing I noticed was I liked the way the book was written, it was nice and easy to read making it a hard book to put down.
Happy reading,
-Mei
