Twin Crowns by Catherine Doyle & Katherine Webber: A Review

I'm back again with a newer piece of YA fantasy! The novel 'Twin Crowns' was released in May this year and many people have been reading and reviewing this one. As well as being mesmerized by the beautiful cover art, I was completely enthralled by this book and found it a refreshing tale of modern feminism and badass girls! I am loving how many books are now including strong feminine protagonists and antagonists.

Here is a brief plot summary: Rose and Wren are twin sisters who were separated at birth. Rose has been raised as the crown princess, but Wren has been raised by witches and trained to swap places with her sister, earn her place under the crown, and avenge her dead parents. Wren Greenrock has always known that she would one day take her sister's place in the castle and Rose Valhart has been taught to fear witches and their dangerous magic. Rose is blissfully unaware of the adventures and struggles she will soon encounter when her sister Wren makes the swap.

I loved Rose's character arc and watching Wren try and learn more royal ways. I could vividly picture the sky-high towers of the Eanan Castle and the rolling sands of the wide Ganyeve Desert, and once again, I got carried away, well into the night, reading this book. Rose's character development is a lovely example of a well-written woman, as we see her learn Eana's true heritage and what the truth behind her past really is. I love Wren's badass attitude and seeing her struggle to understand the sophisticated ways of royal life.

The split perspective in the book allows for you to be enchanted by the adventures of Rose and her captor Shen, while also watching wren struggle to find her way around her new life. There is a light amount of romance in the book and a plot that is yet to be resolved as we wait for the second book...

...I can't wait for the next book in this new series and this is an easy read for getting you out of a reading slump. This book is perfect for teen readers and above. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs their next read, it is just so versatile and enchanting.

Happy Reading,
- Mei
